Have you thought about your air vents lately? Probably not since they are neatly tucked away on the floor or the ceiling. They bring heat in the winter and cool air in the summer and just generally don’t get a second thought. Ok, so now that you are thinking about them, take a moment now to consider when was the last time  you cleaned them?

If you haven’t done it in awhile (or ever), this is an easy task you can do on your own to quickly remove dust and improve the air quality in your house. And if you have pets, this is a great time to clean up any extra pet hair that has made its way through the vent grilles.

Take your regular vacuum, shop vac, or duster and carefully vacuum/dust the top of the vent grille to remove the dust and hair. Gently take the grille out and then vacuum/dust the backside of it as well as the first few inches inside the duct. You want to be gentle and make sure not to go to far in. If your ducts look too dirty for a short cleaning to help, then it is time to call in a professional.

Once you are done with this task at all the vents in your house, find the return and do the same thing there. Then, schedule a reminder for yourself to make this a part of your normal seasonal cleaning.
